Harpin's Funeral Service has been providing services within the local area for over 90 years.
In 1930, Leonard and Vera Harpin purchased their first Rolls Royce and started to work within the funeral industry in around 1932. Through hard work, the fleet soon increased to consist of two hearses and thirteen limousines. The limousines were originally used for a variety of purposes, such as weddings, and not kept just for funeral work. They also hired the fleet to Funeral Directors in the area who didn’t own their own vehicles.
Leonard and Vera were helped in the running of the business by their fourteen children and numerous friends.
Our first Chapel of Rest was on Arundel Street, Wakefield but in 1977 a purpose built Funeral Home was opened at Back Mount Pleasant, Wakefield. This was followed by further Funeral Homes at Ledger Lane, Outwood and Cluntergate, Horbury.
Over the years, there have been many changes. Our fleet has become smaller but more modern as the size of funeral corteges has decreased. Leonard and Vera have passed away but their grand children, Sean and Sara, now work for the company as Senior Funeral Director and Business Principle.
Harpins Funeral Service has gained a reputation for being a professional yet caring business coming a long way from our humble beginnings.
